Michael Harden (born February 16, 1959) is a former American football player. He played as a defensive back in both college and professional leagues. Harden played college football for the University of Michigan from 1977 to 1979. After college, he joined the National Football League (NFL). He played for 11 years, first with the Denver Broncos (1980–1988) and then with the Los Angeles Raiders (1989–1990).
Early Life and High School
Michael Harden was born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1959. When he was growing up, he attended Central High School. This school is located in Detroit, Michigan.
College Football Career
Harden started playing college football at the University of Michigan in 1976. He was a defensive back for the Michigan Wolverines football team. Their coach was Bo Schembechler.
In September 1978, Harden made a big play. He intercepted a pass thrown by Joe Montana. This helped his team win against Notre Dame with a score of 28–14. Because of his great performance, he was chosen as a first-team defensive back. This honor was for the 1978 All-Big Ten Conference football team.
During his time in college, Harden had impressive stats. He made 89 tackles and helped with 42 others. He also caught 6 interceptions and returned them for 95 yards. Harden broke up 16 passes and recovered 3 fumbles. He also returned 24 punts for 156 yards.
Playing in the NFL
The Denver Broncos picked Michael Harden in the 1980 NFL draft. He was the 131st player chosen overall. He played for the Broncos from 1980 to 1988. During this time, he played in 128 games. He started 98 of those games as a safety or cornerback. He intercepted 33 passes while playing for the Broncos.
One notable moment happened in a game against the Seattle Seahawks in 1988. Harden intercepted a pass from Dave Krieg. He returned it 25 yards before being tackled by Steve Largent. Largent also recovered the fumbled ball. This play was part of an intense rivalry between the two players.
Harden finished his professional career with the Los Angeles Raiders. He played for them during the 1989 and 1990 seasons. Over his 11 years in the NFL, he intercepted 38 passes. These interceptions led to 663 return yards and 4 touchdowns. He also recovered 14 fumbles. In 1986, his 179 interception return yards set a record for the Broncos. Harden also played on special teams. He returned 8 punts for 113 yards and one touchdown. He also returned 26 kickoffs for 414 yards.
Family Life
Michael Harden is married to Magaly Fernandez Harden. They have one child together. In total, Michael has three children: Taler (born May 1985), Chanel (born May 1995), and Alexander (born January 1997). He is also a grandfather to four grandchildren.
