Michel Krieger (born March 4, 1986) is a Brazilian entrepreneur and software engineer. He is best known for co-founding Instagram with Kevin Systrom. He also served as Instagram's Chief Technology Officer (CTO). During his time as CTO, Instagram grew from a few million users to over one billion people using it every month.
On September 24, 2018, Krieger and Systrom announced they were leaving Instagram. In May 2024, Krieger shared that he had joined Anthropic as their Chief Product Officer.

Mike Krieger's Journey
Early Life and Education
Michel Krieger was born in São Paulo, Brazil. In 2004, he moved to California to study at Stanford University. At Stanford, he studied symbolic systems. This is where he met Kevin Systrom.
Starting Instagram
In 2010, Krieger and Systrom started Instagram together. They first thought about making an app for checking into places. But then they decided to focus only on sharing pictures. In the beginning, Krieger did most of the work on the app's engineering and how users experienced it.
After Facebook bought Instagram, Krieger worked hard to help Instagram grow on its own.
New Projects After Instagram
On April 18, 2020, Krieger and Systrom worked together again. They launched Rt.live. This was their first project since leaving Facebook. Rt.live was a website that tracked how fast COVID-19 was spreading in each US state.
On January 31, 2023, Krieger and Systrom launched Artifact. This was a news app that used artificial intelligence (AI). It was available on the App Store and Google Play. They announced that the app would shut down in January 2024.
On May 15, 2024, Krieger announced that he joined Anthropic. Anthropic is a company that works on AI. He became their Chief Product Officer.
Giving Back
Supporting Charities
In April 2015, Krieger announced he was working with GiveWell. GiveWell is a group that helps people find effective charities. He promised to give US$750,000 over two years. This money was to help GiveWell operate. Most of the funds went to grants chosen through the Open Philanthropy Project.
Helping Arts and Culture
In 2021, Krieger and his wife helped fund the opening of the Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco (ICA SF). This art museum is in Dogpatch. They contributed alongside other supporters like Pamela and David Hornik, and Deborah and Andy Rappaport.
Personal Life
Krieger married Kaitlyn Trigger in 2015.
