Michael Anthony Mitchell (born January 1, 1956 – died June 9, 2011) was an American professional basketball player. He played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for eleven seasons, from 1978 to 1990.

College Basketball Career
Mitchell was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He played college basketball at Auburn University. During his time at Auburn, Mitchell was chosen as an All-SEC player four times. He was also named a second-team All-American in his final season (1977–78).
He became Auburn's all-time leader in scoring with 2,123 points. He also led the team in rebounding with 996 rebounds. His number 30 jersey was retired by Auburn on January 19, 2013. This is a special honor for great players.
Professional Basketball Career
Mitchell was picked 15th overall in the first round of the 1978 NBA Draft. He was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He started his NBA career with the Cavaliers. However, he played most of his career for the San Antonio Spurs.
Mitchell was a small forward. He was 6 feet 7 inches tall and weighed 234 pounds. On average, he scored 19.8 points per game during his NBA career. He also grabbed 5.6 rebounds and made 1.3 assists per game.
Mitchell was chosen as an All-Star in 1981. He was among the top ten scorers in the NBA four times. He also led the Spurs in scoring during the 1984–1985 season. This was a big deal because he outscored the famous player George Gervin that year.
Mitchell scored a total of 9,799 points for the San Antonio Spurs. This is the seventh-highest total in the team's history. Only players like Tim Duncan and David Robinson have scored more for the Spurs.
After his time in the NBA, Mitchell played basketball in Europe. From 1988, he played in Italy for Basket Brescia. He also played for Basket Napoli in Italy. In 1991, he moved to Israel to play for Maccabi Tel Aviv. From 1992 until he retired in 1999, Mitchell played for another Italian team, Pallacanestro Reggiana.
Life After Basketball
After retiring from playing, Mitchell worked as a counselor. He helped young people in San Antonio who were facing difficulties.

Sadly, Mike Mitchell passed away from cancer in 2011.
