Michael Anthony Sanders (born May 7, 1960) is an American former professional basketball player. He mostly played as a small forward. He was chosen by the Kansas City Kings in the 1982 NBA draft. Later, he became an assistant coach for the Utah Jazz in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Before coaching, he helped players develop their skills for the Jazz team.

Playing in College and the NBA

Mike Sanders was born in Vidalia, Louisiana. After playing college basketball at UCLA, he was picked by the Kansas City Kings in the 1982 NBA draft. He was the 74th player chosen overall.

Sanders played in the NBA for 11 seasons. During his time, he played for teams like the San Antonio Spurs, Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Indiana Pacers. On average, he scored about eight points and grabbed three rebounds per game.

Playing in the CBA

Early in his career, Mike also played in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). He played for the Montana Golden Nuggets and the Sarasota Stingers. In the CBA, he was very good, averaging over 23 points and almost 9 rebounds per game.

In 1983, he earned some special awards in the CBA. He was named the CBA Rookie of the Year. He also made the All-CBA First Team and the All-Defensive Second Team.

After he stopped playing basketball, Mike Sanders started a new career as a coach.

Head Coaching Roles

He became a head coach for a few teams. These included the Black Hills Gold in the IBA. He also coached the Wisconsin Blast (also in the IBA) and the Adirondack Wildcats in the USBL.

Assistant Coaching Roles

Sanders also worked as an assistant coach for several NBA teams. He helped coach the Detroit Pistons, Milwaukee Bucks, and Charlotte Bobcats. His coaching career ended in 2014.
