Michael Jay Woods (born November 1, 1954 – died May 29, 2009) was a talented American football player. He played as a linebacker for the Baltimore Colts in the National Football League (NFL) for three seasons. The Colts chose him in the second round of the 1978 NFL Draft. Before playing professionally, Mike went to several colleges: Ellsworth Community College, the University of Tampa, and finally the University of Cincinnati. He also attended Benedictine High School in Cleveland, Ohio.

Early Life and High School Sports
Mike Woods grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. He went to Benedictine High School. There, he was a very active student-athlete. He played three different sports for the Benedictine High School Bengals. These sports were football, basketball, and track and field.
College Football Career
Mike Woods started his college football journey at Ellsworth Community College. After that, he moved to the University of Tampa. In 1975, he transferred again to the University of Cincinnati. This move happened because the University of Tampa stopped its football program in 1974.
Playing for the Cincinnati Bearcats
Mike played for the Cincinnati Bearcats from 1975 to 1977. He became a first-team All-American in 1977. This was a huge honor! He was the first student from the University of Cincinnati to earn this special award. In his senior year, Mike made 114 tackles. This shows how good he was at stopping opposing players. He was also chosen to play in the Senior Bowl, a game for top college football players. In 2006, Mike was honored by his college. He was put into the first-ever Bearcats Ring of Honor.
Professional Football Career
Playing for the Baltimore Colts
The Baltimore Colts picked Mike Woods in the 1978 NFL Draft. He was the 52nd player chosen overall. He played for the Colts from 1979 to 1981. During his time with the team, he played in 36 games. He started in 19 of those games as a linebacker.
Later Life and Passing
Mike Woods faced a serious injury in 1982. This injury greatly changed his life. He passed away on May 29, 2009.
