Mildred's Early Days and Growth
Mildred was started in 1907 by a man named Sam Dermott. He created the community for the Great Western Cement Company. The town got its name from Mildred Wagner, whose father, J. W. Wagner, was a local business leader and the president of the cement company.
For many years, the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad served Mildred. This railroad had a station in town and special tracks that went to the cement plant and a grain storage building. Cement from Mildred was sent all over the world! Some of it was even used to build the famous Liberty Memorial and World War I museum in Kansas City, Missouri.
At its busiest time, about 2,000 people lived in Mildred. The cement plant was a big employer, with 375 workers. However, when the plant closed, most people moved away. Mildred used to be an official city, but it later stopped being one.
