Hickory Grove is a small place in Illinois, United States. It's not officially a city or town. Instead, it's called an unincorporated community. This means it doesn't have its own local government.

Hickory Grove is located in Ellington Township, which is part of Adams County. It sits right outside the city of Quincy. It's also considered part of the larger Quincy area, which includes parts of Missouri.

Many people think of Hickory Grove as the second biggest suburb of Quincy. A suburb is a town or area close to a larger city.

Where is Hickory Grove?

Hickory Grove stretches for almost a mile along a road called Broadway. This is between 60th Street and 70th Street. Other parts of Hickory Grove are spread out near Interstate 172. This includes areas around the Columbus Road and Wisman Lane exits. It also includes the Rim Road area on State Street.

How Hickory Grove Grew

For a long time, Hickory Grove was mostly open land. It was not built up like the city of Quincy. But in the early 1990s, things started to change. A road called Illinois Route 336 was made into a bigger highway, Interstate 172. This new highway made it easier for people to travel to and from the area.

In 2004, construction began on a large shopping center. It was first called Prairie Crossing. Now, it's known as Prairie Trail. When this shopping center was finished, more cars and people came to Hickory Grove. Later that year, Quincy officially took over Hickory Grove. This process is called annexation. It means a city expands its borders to include a nearby area.

Prairie Trail Shopping Center

Prairie Trail is a modern shopping complex. It was the first big shopping area built in Quincy to the east of Interstate 172. The shopping center has clear boundaries. 63rd Street is on its eastern side. A highway exit ramp is on its western side. Illinois Route 104 (Broadway) forms its northern border.

Most of the stores at Prairie Trail opened in 2005. Some of the first businesses to open there included:

  • Lowe's (a home improvement store)
  • Kohl's (a department store)
  • Old Navy (a clothing store)
  • T.J. Maxx (a discount department store)
  • MC Sports (a sporting goods store, now closed)
  • Great Clips salon (a hair salon)
  • Shoe Carnival (a shoe store)
  • Buffalo Wild Wings (a restaurant)
  • Best Buy (an electronics store)

Why the Name Mill Creek?

Sometimes, people get confused and call Hickory Grove "Mill Creek township." This happens because a small stream called Mill Creek flows through the area. Also, the two water towers in Hickory Grove have "Mill Creek" written on them. However, there is another town named Mill Creek, Illinois in a different part of the state. This can sometimes cause confusion.
