Millennium Force at RCDB |
Millennium Force is a super-tall steel roller coaster located at Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio, United States. When it first opened on May 13, 2000, it was a record-breaker. It was the very first "giga coaster" in the world, standing an amazing 310 feet (94 meters) tall. For a short time, it was also the tallest and fastest roller coaster on Earth!
Millennium Force was designed by Werner Stengel and built by the company Intamin. It cost about US$25 million to create this giant ride. Even today, it remains one of the most popular attractions at Cedar Point, known for its incredible height and speed.

What is a Giga Coaster?
A "giga coaster" is a special type of roller coaster that is between 300 and 399 feet (91 to 121 meters) tall. Millennium Force was the first coaster ever to reach this height. This made it a huge step forward in roller coaster design.
The Ride Experience
Millennium Force is an "out and back" style coaster. This means it goes out a long way from the station and then comes back. The ride lasts about 2 minutes and 20 seconds.
Climbing to the Top
Your adventure begins as the train leaves the station. Instead of a traditional chain lift, Millennium Force uses a fast cable lift hill. This pulls you up the massive 310-foot (94-meter) hill very quickly. As you climb, you get an amazing view of Lake Erie and the entire Cedar Point park. It feels like you're going straight up into the sky!
The Giant Drop
Once you reach the top, there's no slowing down. The train immediately plunges down a thrilling 300-foot (91-meter) drop at an 80-degree angle. This drop sends you speeding at an incredible 93 miles per hour (150 km/h)! It's one of the fastest drops on any roller coaster.
Twists, Turns, and Hills
After the first huge drop, the ride continues with high-speed turns and airtime hills. You'll experience:
- A large "overbanked turn" that feels like you're almost upside down, but you're not quite.
- Two more hills that send you flying over a lagoon, giving you a feeling of weightlessness.
- Another overbanked turn on an island.
- A final "airtime hill" before the train slows down and returns to the station.
The entire track is 6,595 feet (2,010 meters) long, making it one of the longest roller coasters in North America.
Records and Achievements
When Millennium Force opened in 2000, it set several world records:
- First giga coaster (over 300 feet tall).
- Tallest complete circuit roller coaster.
- Fastest complete circuit roller coaster.
- Longest drop on a roller coaster.
While some of these records were broken later that same year by Steel Dragon 2000 in Japan, Millennium Force remains a very important and impressive roller coaster. It is still the second longest roller coaster in North America, after The Beast at Kings Island.
