Cedar Point is a huge 364-acre (147 ha) amusement park located on a peninsula in Sandusky, Ohio, USA. It sits right on Lake Erie and is owned by Six Flags. The park first opened in 1870, making it one of the oldest amusement parks still running in the United States!
Cedar Point is famous for its amazing roller coasters. It's even called "America's Roller Coast" because it has 18 roller coasters, which is the second-highest number in North America. The park is home to five roller coasters that are over 200 feet (61 m) tall: Magnum XL-200, Millennium Force, Valravn, Steel Vengeance, and Top Thrill 2.
The park is usually open from early May until Labor Day in September. After that, it opens only on weekends through Halloween for a special event called HalloWeekends. Besides rides, Cedar Point has a one-mile-long (1.6 km) beach, a water park called Cedar Point Shores, an indoor water park called Castaway Bay, and two marinas.
Cedar Point has won many awards. It was named "Best Amusement Park in the World" for 16 years in a row by Amusement Today. It's also one of the most visited seasonal amusement parks in North America, with over 3.4 million visitors in 2022. Many of its old buildings are even listed as historic places.

Park History: How it All Began
In the late 1800s, the area around Lake Erie became a popular spot for vacations. People loved the freshwater beaches. The Cedar Point peninsula, named for its many cedar trees, was first known for fishing.
In 1870, a man named Louis Zistel started taking people by boat to the Cedar Point peninsula. He opened a bathhouse and a small beer garden. People paid 25 cents to ride his boat, which was the start of tourism at Cedar Point.
More people started visiting the beach. In 1882, Benjamin F. Dwelle and Captain William Slackford built more bathhouses and a dance hall. They added picnic tables and a baseball field. In 1888, a large building called the Grand Pavilion opened. It had a theater, concert hall, and bowling alley. This building is still in the park today!
The first amusement ride at Cedar Point was a water toboggan in 1890. It launched riders into Lake Erie. Electricity came to the park in 1891. The first roller coaster, Switchback Railway, opened in 1892. It was 25 feet (7.6 m) tall and went 10 miles per hour (16 km/h).
The Boeckling Era: A Resort Grows
In 1897, George A. Boeckling became the park's new manager. He helped turn Cedar Point from a simple picnic spot into a famous amusement park and resort.
More rides were added, like the Figure-Eight Roller Toboggan in 1902. To fix a mosquito problem, swampy areas were drained in 1904. This created beautiful lagoons that became a popular attraction. In 1905, the historic Hotel Breakers opened. It was one of the biggest hotels in the Midwest with 600 rooms.
By 1912, Cedar Point had several roller coasters, including Leap the Dips. Even with more rides, Boeckling focused on making Cedar Point a great beach resort with shows and entertainment. He added more hotels and restaurants. The wooden roller coaster, Cyclone, opened in 1929. Boeckling passed away in 1931.
New Beginnings and Roller Coaster Fame
After Boeckling, the park faced tough times during the Great Depression and World War II. Not many new rides were built. In 1946, the Midway Carousel, which is still at the park today, was installed. The old Cyclone coaster was removed in 1951.
In 1957, the Cedar Point Causeway was built, making it easier to get to the park. George Roose took over management around 1958. He invested a lot of money to update the park. The Wild Mouse roller coaster and a new monorail opened in 1959.
In 1964, Cedar Point built its oldest roller coaster that is still running, the Blue Streak. It was named after the local high school's sports teams. The Cedar Creek Mine Ride opened in 1969, becoming the second oldest coaster.
In the 1970s, more rides like the Giant Wheel and Corkscrew were added. Corkscrew was special because it was the first coaster to go over the midway and have three inversions (upside-down loops). In 1978, Gemini opened, advertised as the tallest, fastest, and steepest coaster in the world at the time.
Cedar Point started its own company, Cedar Fair, in 1983. This company later bought other amusement parks.
Record-Breaking Rides and Modern Fun
In 1989, Magnum XL-200 opened. It was the first roller coaster in the world to be over 200 feet (61 m) tall and go faster than 70 mph (110 km/h). This ride helped Cedar Point become known as a "big time roller coaster park." Mean Streak, a huge wooden coaster, opened in 1991.
The outdoor water park, Soak City, opened in 1988. In 1994, Raptor debuted as the tallest, fastest, and longest inverted roller coaster in the world.
In 1997, the park started HalloWeekends, a popular Halloween-themed event with haunted houses. Camp Snoopy opened in 1999 with rides based on the Peanuts characters.
The year 2000 brought Millennium Force, the first giga coaster in the world. It climbed 310 ft (94 m) and reached 93 mph (150 km/h)! In 2003, Top Thrill Dragster (now Top Thrill 2) opened, becoming the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the world at 420 ft (130 m) and 120 mph (190 km/h).
More exciting rides followed, like Maverick in 2007 and WindSeeker in 2011, a tall tower that spins riders high above Lake Erie.
In 2013, GateKeeper, a huge wing coaster, opened with a new main entrance for the park. In 2016, Valravn debuted as the tallest, fastest, and longest dive coaster in the world.
In 2018, the old Mean Streak wooden coaster was transformed into Steel Vengeance, a hybrid steel and wood coaster that broke many records.
In 2020, the park's 150th-anniversary celebration was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was celebrated in 2021. In 2024, Top Thrill Dragster was updated and reopened as Top Thrill 2. On July 1, 2024, Cedar Point joined the Six Flags family when Cedar Fair merged with Six Flags. In 2025, a new coaster called Siren's Curse opened.
