Milton Bluehouse Sr. (born February 29, 1936 – died January 14, 2019) was an important leader for the Navajo Nation. He served as the fourth president of the Navajo Nation after the government was reorganized.
Early Life and Service
Milton Bluehouse Sr. was born in Ganado, Arizona. When he was older, he joined the United States Army and served for three years. After his time in the military, he became involved in the government of the Navajo Nation.
Bluehouse Sr. was a member of the Navajo Tribal Council. This council helps make important decisions for the Navajo people. He also served as the Vice President, working alongside President Thomas Atcitty.
Becoming President
Milton Bluehouse Sr. became president after President Atcitty left office. There was a rule that said someone appointed as Vice President might not be able to become president. However, the Navajo Nation leaders changed this rule. This allowed Milton Bluehouse Sr. to become the fourth president. He served from July 1998 to January 1999.
