Milton Henry Hardy (born September 26, 1844 – died August 23, 1905) was an important American teacher. He helped start the Young Men's Mutual Improvement Association (YMMIA). This group was part of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church).
From 1876 to 1880, Milton H. Hardy was the first assistant to Junius F. Wells. Wells was the first leader of the YMMIA.
Early Life and Family
Milton Hardy was born in Bradford, Massachusetts, in the United States. In 1852, when he was eight years old, his family moved to Utah Territory. They had recently joined the LDS Church.
Milton Hardy was baptized into the Church on October 17, 1852. He later married Elizabeth "Libbie" Smoot. They had five children together.
Church Service and Leadership
From 1871 to 1873, Milton Hardy served as a missionary for the LDS Church. He taught people about his faith in the United States.
In 1875, the church president, Brigham Young, asked Milton Hardy to do something special. He asked Hardy, John Henry Smith, and B. Morris Young to travel around. Their job was to start YMMIA groups in different church areas called wards.
After this work was done, President Young chose Junius F. Wells to be the first main leader of the YMMIA. Wells then picked Milton Hardy and Rodney C. Badger to be his assistants. This leadership group worked together until 1880.
Even after that, Milton Hardy stayed involved with the YMMIA. From 1898 until he passed away, he was a member of the YMMIA's main board.
Starting in 1880, Hardy also served as the president of the Utah County Stake. A stake is a large group of church congregations.
Career as an Educator
Milton Hardy earned a special degree called a doctorate. He studied biology, which is the study of living things. He was one of the first teachers at Brigham Young Academy (BYA) in Provo, Utah Territory.
From 1876 to 1888, and again from 1891 to 1896, Hardy taught at BYA. He taught physiology (how the body works) and biology. He also worked as an assistant principal under Karl G. Maeser.
In the 1886–87 school year, Milton Hardy became the first teacher to offer a class in psychology at a school owned by the LDS Church. Psychology is the study of the mind and how people think and behave.
From 1896 until 1905, Hardy was in charge of the Utah State Hospital. This hospital helped people with mental health challenges. He left this job in June 1905 because he was having health problems.
