Milton Metz (born around 1921 – died January 12, 2017) was a well-known radio and television host from Louisville, Kentucky. He was famous for his friendly voice and interesting shows. For many years, he also did voice-overs for commercials.

About Milton Metz's Early Life

Milton Metz was born in Cleveland, Ohio. Records from 1930 show he was eight years old then. He lived with his father, Solomon, who was from Russia, and his mother, Sarah, from England. He also had two older sisters, Florance and Mildred. Later, he went to Ohio State University.

Milton Metz didn't share much about his personal life. He liked to keep his age a secret. In an interview, he once joked that he was older than one famous TV host but younger than another.

Milton Metz's Broadcasting Career

Milton Metz was often called "El Metzo" by his fans. He started working at WHAS (AM) radio in 1946. This was a big step in his long career.

Pioneering Call-In Radio Shows

His most famous show was Metz Here. It started on July 20, 1959, and ran until June 10, 1993. This show was one of the very first call-in radio shows ever! It helped create the idea of "talk radio" that is so popular today.

Milton Metz often had interesting guests on his show. He was always very kind to both his guests and the people who called in. Because WHAS radio was a powerful station, people in 40 states and much of Canada could listen to Metz Here.

Milton Metz on Television

Metz was also a familiar face on local television. He helped host and produce Omelet, a morning talk and news show on WHAS-TV. For 19 years, he was also the station's weatherman.

He interviewed many famous people during the Kentucky Derby celebrations. He was a regular at "Millionaire's Row" at Churchill Downs, where many important guests gathered. Later in his career, he did short daily commentaries on WHAS radio.

Helping the Community

Milton Metz was a big part of the WHAS Crusade for Children. This is a special event that raises money for children. He participated in the telethon every year since it started in 1954.

He also recorded talking books for the American Printing House for the Blind until 1980. This helped people who couldn't see enjoy books.

Awards and Recognition

Milton Metz was honored for his amazing work. In 1989, he was added to the University of Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame. In 2009, he received a Gold Circle Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Milton Metz's Later Years

Milton Metz passed away on January 12, 2017. He was 95 years old. He had been living in a senior-care facility near Louisville after an injury. His wife, Mimi, had passed away a few months before him.
