The Story of Minersville: A Former Railroad Town
Early Days and New Names
It is thought that Native American tribes lived in this area first. The village officially became a town on May 4, 1857. A few years later, a person named James Carmichael bought the town. He changed its name to "Otoe City."
The Coal Discovery and Renaming
In the early 1860s, a small amount of coal was found near the village. This coal was not very good quality or quantity. Still, in 1864, the town was renamed "Minersville."
Life in Minersville and the Railroad
By this time, Minersville had several important places. It had a general store where people could buy supplies. There was also a post office, a saloon, and a blacksmith shop. A Congregational church was also part of the community. In 1874, the Midland Pacific Railway built train tracks through the town. Later, the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad and Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroads used these tracks.
The End of Minersville
The Minersville post office closed down in 1923. This was one of the last signs of the town. Minersville eventually became a "ghost town," meaning it was no longer inhabited.
