Minginish facts for kids
Minginish (pronounced Min-gin-ish) is a beautiful peninsula located on the western side of the Isle of Skye in Scotland. A peninsula is a piece of land almost surrounded by water but connected to the mainland on one side. Minginish stretches from Loch Scavaig in the south to Loch Bracadale in the north west. It also touches Loch Harport in the north east and Glen Sligachan in the south east.
This area is famous for its stunning natural beauty. It is home to most of the Cuillin hills, which are rugged mountains. The highest point on the Isle of Skye, a peak called Sgùrr Alasdair, is found here. It stands tall at about 992 meters (3,255 feet). Just off the coast of Minginish, you can see the island of Soay. Further south are the Small Isles.

To the east, you'll find Loch Coruisk. This beautiful loch is quite remote. You can only reach it by boat or by walking along a path from Sligachan. Many famous artists, like William Daniell and J.M.W. Turner, have painted Loch Coruisk. Even the famous writer Walter Scott visited this special place.

The Name Minginish
The name Minginish comes from the Gaelic language, where it is called Minginis. This means "main headland." It was also known by an old Norse name, "Mikil Nes," which meant "great headland." Both names describe the peninsula's important position.
