Miracle of the White Stallions is a 1963 film made by Walt Disney. It stars Robert Taylor as Alois Podhajsky, along with Lilli Palmer and Eddie Albert. The movie tells the true story of how special Lipizzaner horses were saved during World War II.
These famous white horses belonged to the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, Austria. Parts of the film were shot at the beautiful Hermesvilla palace in Vienna. The music for the movie's soundtrack was inspired by a piece called Marche Militaire no 1 by Franz Schubert.
The Story of the Film
The film takes place in Austria during World War II. Colonel Alois Podhajsky is in charge of the amazing Lipizzaner stallions. These are purebred white show horses with a history going back hundreds of years.
Colonel Podhajsky wants to protect his beloved horses. He worries they might starve because of the war. He also fears they could be taken by the advancing Soviet Army, who might see them as food.
To keep the horses safe, he tries to surrender them to U.S. General George S. Patton. General Patton was known for loving horses, so Podhajsky hoped he would help protect them.
