Alejandrina Mireya Luis Hernández (born August 25, 1967) is a famous former volleyball player from Cuba. She is known as one of the greatest volleyball players ever! Mireya won three gold medals at the Olympic Games with the Cuban women's national volleyball team. She was also the captain of her team for many years.

In 2004, Mireya was honored by being added to the International Volleyball Hall of Fame. This means she is recognized as one of the best volleyball players in history.

Mireya Luis: A Volleyball Legend

Starting Young

Mireya began playing volleyball when she was just 10 years old. By the time she was 16, she joined the Cuban national team. Her first big win with the team was a gold medal at the 1983 Pan American Games. These games are a major sports event for countries in the Americas.

Pan American Games Success

Mireya continued to shine at the Pan American Games. She helped Cuba win gold medals again in 1987, 1991, and 1995. She won a silver medal in 1999.

World Championships and World Cups

Mireya also had amazing success in other big international tournaments.

FIVB World Cup Achievements

In 1985, Mireya and her Cuban team won a silver medal at the 1985 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Cup. She was even named the "best attacker" in that tournament! Later, she helped Cuba win gold medals at the World Cup in 1989, 1991, and 1995. She was often recognized as the "best spiker" and "most valuable player" in these events.

World Championship Victories

Mireya led Cuba to a silver medal at the 1986 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship. Then, she guided her team to gold medals at the World Championships in 1994 and 1998.

Olympic Glory

After a short break in 1990 due to a knee injury, Mireya returned stronger than ever.

Three Olympic Gold Medals

Mireya won her first Olympic gold medal in 1992 in Barcelona, Spain. She won her second Olympic gold medal in 1996 in Atlanta, USA. Even though she thought about retiring after her second gold, she decided to keep playing for her country. Mireya achieved her third Olympic gold medal in 2000 in Sydney, Australia. She retired from playing in 2001, leaving a huge legacy.

Mireya's Amazing Jump

Mireya was famous for her incredible jumping power. Even though she was only 1.75 meters (5 feet 9 inches) tall, she could jump and hit the ball at a height of 3.39 meters (11 feet 1 inch)! This was higher than almost any other player, making her a very powerful attacker.

Mireya's Role in FIVB

In 2018, Mireya was chosen to be the executive vice president of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). The FIVB is the main organization that controls international volleyball. This shows her continued importance in the world of volleyball.

Personal Life

Mireya has a daughter named Idanaisi and a grandson named Darío.
