Miriama Jennet Kamo (born 19 October 1973) is a well-known New Zealand journalist and television presenter. She also writes books for children. Miriama currently hosts TVNZ's Māori current affairs show called Marae. She also presented the current affairs programme Sunday for many years, from 2002 until it ended in 2024.

Early life

Miriama was born in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1973. She went to New Brighton Catholic Primary School. Later, she attended Aranui High School. In 1995, she finished her studies at the University of Canterbury. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.

Career in Television and Writing

Miriama Kamo started her television career early. While studying at CPIT, she got her first TV job. She worked as a reporter and presenter on a children's science show called Get Real.

Early TV Roles

After Get Real, Miriama moved to Wellington. There, she worked as a reporter for backch@t. This show was about arts and important issues. After backch@t finished, she briefly lived in Sydney, Australia. She worked in different jobs there, including as an assistant manager at an art gallery.

Joining TVNZ

Miriama came back to New Zealand in 2001. In 2002, she joined Television New Zealand (TVNZ). She became a reporter for the current affairs show, Sunday. Current affairs shows talk about important news and events happening right now.

She also sometimes filled in as a presenter for 1News and Breakfast. From 2005 to 2011, Miriama hosted another TVNZ current affairs show called 20/20. Between 2008 and 2012, she was a weekend news anchor for TVNZ 7's News at 8.

Important Reporting

In 2010, Miriama Kamo and fellow presenter Rawdon Christie reported live. They covered the events after the 2010 Canterbury earthquake. This was a very important time for Christchurch. From 2015 to 2016, Miriama hosted Kiwi Living. This was a lifestyle show on TVNZ.

Current Roles and Books

Since 2011, Miriama Kamo has been a host for several TVNZ shows. These include Sunday and the Māori current affairs programme Marae. She also hosts Sunday Innovate, an online series about technology.

Miriama also writes for different magazines and newspapers. Her first children's book was published in 2018. It is called The Stolen Stars of Matariki. It was published by Scholastic.

Awards and Recognition

Miriama Kamo has received several awards for her work.

Reporting Awards

In 2005, Miriama won an award at the Qantas Television Awards. She was named Best Current Affairs Reporter. This was for her investigation into problems at Porirua Hospital in the 1960s and 70s. The judges said she was very good at connecting with people. Miriama later said this story made a big impression on her. It helped her grow as a journalist and as a person.

In 2019, Miriama won Best Reporter - Maori Affairs. This award was part of the 2019 Voyager Media Awards. She won for her work on Marae and Sunday.

Book Awards

Her children's book, Stolen Stars of Matariki, was also recognized. In 2019, it was a finalist in the New Zealand Post Book Awards. It was nominated for the Te Kura Pounamu Award. This award is for books written completely in te reo Māori.

Personal life

Miriama Kamo is married to Michael Dreaver. He is a consultant and helps with Treaty of Waitangi discussions. They got married in 2015. They have one daughter, who was born in 2011. Miriama is from the Ngāi Tahu and Ngāti Mutunga Māori tribes.
