Mirinda Carfrae (born 26 March 1981) is an amazing Australian athlete. She is a professional triathlete and has won the Ironman Triathlon World Championship three times! People sometimes call her Rinny. A triathlete competes in three sports: swimming, cycling, and running, one after the other. Ironman races are super long and tough!

Mirinda has done incredibly well in the Ironman World Championships. She finished in the top three in six out of seven tries! She won first place in 2010, 2013, and 2014. She also came in second three times (2009, 2011, 2016) and third once (2012).

She also won the 2007 Ironman 70.3 World Championship. This race is half the distance of a full Ironman. Mirinda was known for her incredible running speed in these races. She set new records for the marathon part of the Ironman Championship several times. In 2013, she set a course record for the entire Ironman Championship race, finishing in 8 hours, 52 minutes, and 14 seconds. She also holds a black belt in Taekwondo!

Mirinda Carfrae's Triathlon Journey

Mirinda started her first triathlon in 2000 when she was 19 years old. She quickly became very good at it. She even represented Australia in races for younger athletes. In 2003, she won a silver medal at the ITU Under 23 World Championships. The next year, she earned another silver medal at a World Cup race in Salford. She was also supported by the Australian Institute of Sport, which helps talented athletes.

Racing Longer Distances

Mirinda first tried a longer triathlon in 2002. It was a "Half Ironman" race, and she finished second. She realized she felt more comfortable racing longer distances. From then on, she knew she wanted to compete in full Ironman races someday.

Her first World Championship medal in a long-distance race was in 2005. She finished second at the ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships. In 2007, she won the Ironman 70.3 World Championships. This big win meant she could race in the full Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. However, she decided to wait until 2009. She wanted to be sure she was strong enough for the super long race.

First Ironman Race and Records

When Mirinda finally raced her first full Ironman in 2009, she finished second! She also set a new record for the running part of the race. She ran the marathon in 2 hours, 56 minutes, and 51 seconds. She said she waited to race Ironman until she felt "physically and mentally strong enough."

Mirinda continued to break records. In 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2014, she set new course records for the marathon section of the Ironman World Championship. Her fastest marathon time was an amazing 2 hours, 50 minutes, and 26 seconds in 2014. In 2013, she set the overall course record for the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. Her time was 8 hours, 52 minutes, and 14 seconds. This record stood until 2016.

In 2015, Mirinda had to stop during the Ironman World Championship. She had been in a car accident earlier that week and was in pain.
