Mirjana Karanović (Serbian Cyrillic: Мирјана Карановић; born 28 January 1957) is a famous Serbian actress, film director, and screenwriter. Many people think she is one of the best actresses from Serbia and the former Yugoslavia. She is well-known for her first movie, Petria's Wreath (Petrijin venac). She has also worked often with famous film directors like Emir Kusturica and Jasmila Žbanić. Mirjana Karanović became famous around the world and was even nominated for a top award, the European Film Award for Best Actress, for her role in Jasmila Žbanić's film Grbavica.
Her first movie as a director, A Good Wife (Dobra žena), was shown for the very first time at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival.

Early Life
Mirjana Karanović was born in Belgrade on January 28, 1957. Her father, Miloje, was a soldier, and her mother, Radmila, worked as a tailor.
Acting Career Highlights
Mirjana Karanović started her acting career in movies in 1980. Her first film was Petrijin venac ("Petrija's Wreath"). She earned a lot of praise for playing an uneducated Serbian woman in this movie.
She became known to audiences around the world for her role as the mother in the 1985 film When Father Was Away on Business.
In 1995, she acted in the film Underground, which was directed by the famous Serbian director Emir Kusturica.
In 2003, Mirjana Karanović made history again. She appeared in a Croatian film called Svjedoci (Witnesses). She was the first actor from Serbia to act in a Croatian film since the countries of Yugoslavia separated. In the movie, she played a character from a country that had been in conflict with Serbia, showing how art can bring people together.
In 2005, she starred in the film Grbavica, made by the Bosnian director Jasmila Žbanić. In this movie, she played a mother dealing with a difficult past and helping her daughter understand their family history.
Supporting Equal Rights
Mirjana Karanović has actively supported equal rights for all people, including LGBT rights. She believes everyone should be treated fairly.
In 2017, Mirjana Karanović signed the Declaration on the Common Language. This declaration helps promote understanding and shared culture among different groups in the region, like Croats, Serbs, Bosniaks, and Montenegrins.
