Mirjana Karanović (born January 28, 1957) is a famous Serbian actress, film director, and writer. Many people think she is one of the best actresses from Serbia and the former country of Yugoslavia.

She is well-known for her first movie, Petria's Wreath, and for working with famous directors like Emir Kusturica and Jasmila Žbanić. For her role in the movie Grbavica, she was nominated for the European Film Award for Best Actress.

Mirjana also directed her own movie called A Good Wife, which was shown at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival in the United States.

Early Life and Education

Mirjana Karanović was born in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. Her father, Miloje, was a soldier, and her mother, Radmila, was a tailor. She studied acting at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade.

Acting Career

Mirjana started her movie career in 1980 with the film Petrijin venac (Petria's Wreath). She played a woman who could not read or write, and her performance was highly praised.

Working with Emir Kusturica

She became known to audiences around the world for her role as the mother in the 1985 film When Father Was Away on Business. In 1995, she starred in another famous movie by director Emir Kusturica called Underground.

Breaking New Ground

In 2003, Mirjana made history by acting in the Croatian film Svjedoci (Witnesses). She was the first actor from Serbia to be in a Croatian movie after the country of Yugoslavia split into several new countries. In the film, she played a woman whose husband had died in the Croatian war.

International Acclaim

In 2005, she starred in the Bosnian film Grbavica. She played a mother who had to deal with a difficult past from the Bosnian War. Her powerful acting in this role earned her a nomination for Best Actress at the European Film Awards.

She has also worked on films in other countries. In 2013, she was in a Greek-Serbian movie called A Place Called Home.

Activism and Charity Work

Mirjana Karanović is known for standing up for what she believes in. She supports equal rights for everyone in Serbia. She also helped start a center that gives support to children and adults who have gone through very difficult experiences.

In 2017, she signed the Declaration on the Common Language. This was an effort to promote understanding and peace between people in the countries of Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro, who all speak very similar languages.
