The Milwaukee Depot in Missoula, Montana, is a special historic building. It was built in 1910 by a big railroad company. This company was called the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. People often called it "The Milwaukee Road." The depot was an important stop on a huge railway line. This line stretched all the way across the country.

The Milwaukee Depot Building

The Milwaukee Depot is actually made up of two main buildings. Both buildings are made of strong brick. The main building is two stories tall. It has a rectangular shape.

What Was Inside the Depot?

The first floor of the main building had waiting rooms for passengers. It also had the station agent's office. This is where tickets were sold and train information was given. The second floor was used for railroad offices. This is where the company managed its operations.

Building Design and Style

The depot building has two tall towers. These towers rise up from the roof. The building's design shows a "Mission" style. You can see this in its tile roofs and special decorations. The second building in the complex was used as a baggage room. This is where travelers' luggage was stored.

What Happened to the Depot?

The Milwaukee Road railroad company faced financial problems. In the mid-1980s, the company went out of business. Because of this, the depot buildings were sold.

New Uses for the Old Depot

After being sold, the buildings were changed. They became a restaurant and a bar. A new section was built to connect the main depot building with the old baggage room. However, the restaurant business did not last long. In the late 1980s, the restaurant closed. The building then sat empty for some time.

The Boone and Crockett Club Takes Over

In the mid-1990s, a group called the Boone and Crockett Club bought the building. This club is a conservation organization. They moved their main offices here from Washington, DC. The club also rented out the second floor. The University of Montana used these offices.

A Historic Landmark

The Milwaukee Depot is a very important building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. The depot was recognized for its unique architecture. It was also recognized for its role in the growth of Missoula. It helped with the city's business development.
