The Boone and Crockett Club is an American group that works to protect nature and wildlife. It teaches about "fair chase" hunting, which means hunting in a way that is respectful and gives the animal a fair chance. This club is the oldest wildlife and habitat conservation group in North America. It was started in the United States in 1887.

The club was founded by Theodore Roosevelt, who later became a U.S. President, and George Bird Grinnell. They named the club after famous American frontiersmen, Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett. These men were known for hunting a lot while exploring new lands. However, they also understood that taking too many animals could harm their populations.

The Boone and Crockett Club created a famous statement about ethical hunting. They also helped protect and expand Yellowstone National Park. The club and its members played a big part in stopping commercial market hunting, where people hunted animals just to sell them. They also helped create the National Park Service, the United States Forest Service, and the National Wildlife Refuge system. All these efforts helped fund conservation and are now part of what is called the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation.

The club's main office is in Missoula, Montana. This city is also home to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

Who Are the Club's Key Members?

Many important people have been part of the Boone and Crockett Club. These include Theodore Roosevelt, George Bird Grinnell, and Aldo Leopold. These individuals helped shape how we think about protecting wildlife and nature today.

The club still acts as a "think-tank." This means they are a group that comes up with new ideas and solutions for conservation. They are also well-known for keeping a system to measure and track large North American animals. This helps them understand how healthy wildlife populations are.

The club has a team of staff members, plus many Regular Members, Professional Members, and thousands of Club Associates.

How the Club Started

In December 1887, Theodore Roosevelt suggested forming the Boone and Crockett Club. This happened at a dinner at his home in New York City. In January 1888, the club officially began.

Here were some of the first officers and members:

  • President: Theodore Roosevelt
  • Secretary: Archibald Rogers
  • Members: Albert Bierstadt, Heber R. Bishop, Benjamin F. Bristow, J. Coleman Drayton, D.G. Elliott, George Bird Grinnell, Arnold Hague, James E. Jones, Clarence King, Wm. H. Merrill Jr, Thomas Paton, John J. Pierrepont, W. Hallett Phillips, E. P. Rogers, Elliott Roosevelt, J.E. Roosevelt, J. W. Roosevelt, Rutherfurd Stuyvesant, W. A. Wadsworth, Bronson Rumsey, Lawrence Rumsey and W.D. Pickett.

The club had clear goals from the start. They wanted to promote good hunting skills and explore the wild areas of the United States. They also aimed to protect native large game animals. Another goal was to observe and record wildlife. Finally, they wanted to discuss ideas about exploration, hunting, and travel.

Learning with the Boone and Crockett Club

The Boone and Crockett Club offers many educational programs. These include camps and workshops held at the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch in Dupuyer, Montana. These programs are not funded by the government. Instead, they are supported by the Boone and Crockett Club itself and by private groups that care about education.

The club's Lee and Penny Anderson Conservation Education Program is located on the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch (TRMR). This is a large, 6,060-acre working cattle ranch. The programs are based out of the Rasmuson Wildlife Conservation Center (RWCC), which is a 5,000-square-foot building. The RWCC is usually open from April 1 to October 31 each year.

Many different educational programs are offered during this time. These include:

  • Field trips for students from kindergarten to 12th grade, focusing on conservation education.
  • The Boone and Crockett Club's own Outdoor Adventure Camps. These are five-day camps where middle school and high school students can stay overnight.
  • MOHAB (Montana High Adventure Base), which is a nationally recognized camp for the Boy Scouts of America.
  • Courses on hunter education.
  • Events for shooting sports.

The center is also available for other groups to rent, including public schools, private organizations, and government agencies.
