The Boone and Crockett Club is an American group that helps protect wildlife and their homes. It teaches about hunting fairly to support conservation. This club is the oldest wildlife and habitat conservation group in North America. It was started in the United States in 1887 by Theodore Roosevelt, who later became president, and George Bird Grinnell. The club was named after famous American frontiersmen, Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett. These men were known for hunting a lot but also understood the importance of not hunting too many animals.

The club helped create the idea of "fair chase" hunting, which means hunting ethically and respectfully. They also worked to expand and protect places like Yellowstone National Park. The club and its members played a big part in stopping commercial hunting, where animals were hunted just for profit. They also helped create the National Park Service, the United States Forest Service, and the National Wildlife Refuge system. All these efforts are part of what is now called the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation.

The club's main office is in Missoula, Montana, in the U.S..

What the Club Does

The Boone and Crockett Club continues to be a leader in wildlife conservation. They are well-known for keeping a special system to measure and track large North American animals. This system helps them understand if wildlife management efforts are working well.

The club has a team of staff members, along with many Regular and Professional Members. Thousands of other people also support the club as Club Associates.

Club History

The idea for the Boone and Crockett Club came about in December 1887. Theodore Roosevelt suggested forming the club at a dinner in New York City. In January 1888, the club officially began.

The first goals of the club were:

  • To encourage skill in hunting with firearms.
  • To explore the wild areas of the United States.
  • To protect native big game animals.
  • To observe and record wildlife.
  • To share ideas about exploration, hunting, and travel.

Education Programs

The Boone and Crockett Club offers many educational programs. These programs are held at the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch in Dupuyer, Montana. The ranch is a large, working cattle ranch that covers 6,060 acres.

The club's Lee and Penny Anderson Conservation Education Program is based at the ranch. It operates from April to October each year. They have a special building called the Rasmuson Wildlife Conservation Center for these programs.

A variety of educational activities are offered, including:

  • Field trips for students from kindergarten to 12th grade.
  • Outdoor Adventure Camps for middle school and high school students. These are five-day camps where kids can learn about nature.
  • A nationally recognized Boy Scouts of America High Adventure Camp called MOHAB (Montana High Adventure Base).
  • Courses on hunter education.
  • Events for shooting sports.

These education programs are supported by the Boone and Crockett Club and private groups. They are not funded by the government.
