The Misurata Province (also known as Provincia di Misurata in Italian) was a part of Libya when it was under Italian rule. It was officially created in 1937. After World War II, when Libya became an independent country, much of this area became known as the Misrata District.

Where Was Misurata Province?

The Misurata Province was located in the northern part of Italian Libya. It was situated between the Tripoli Province and the Benghazi Province. The main city and administrative center of the province was Misurata, which is on the Mediterranean coast.

The province was divided into three main areas, which were called "Circondari" in Italian:

  • Misurata
  • Zliten
  • Khoms

Who Lived in Misurata Province?

In 1939, about 225,000 people lived in the Misurata Province. Most of these people were Arabs and Berbers, who are native to the region.

Around 10,000 Italians also lived there. They mostly settled in the cities of Misurata and Homs. Some Italians also lived in new villages that were built for them, like Gioda, Crispi, Littoriano, and Corradini.

Most of the people living in the province were Muslims. However, there was also a growing number of Catholics because of the Italian people who moved there. About one thousand Jews also lived in Misurata.

Becoming Part of Italy

From 1939, the Misurata Province was officially considered a part of the Kingdom of Italy. This meant it followed the same laws as Italy itself. It was one of four new Italian provinces that were part of what was called the Quarta Sponda (meaning "Fourth Shore"). This was part of a plan by Italy's leader, Mussolini, to expand Italy.

On January 9, 1939, the colony of Italian Libya, including Misurata Province, officially became a part of Italy. It was then seen as a direct part of the Italian state.
