Mitchigan River facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Mitchigan River is a stream about 14.9 miles (24 kilometers) long. It flows through the beautiful Upper Peninsula in the U.S. state of Michigan. This river is an important part of the local water system, connecting several other rivers before its water reaches one of the Great Lakes.

River's Journey

The Mitchigan River starts its journey in the southeast part of Baraga County. From there, it flows mostly south. As it travels, it forms a natural border between Iron County and Marquette County. For a short distance, it even crosses into the western part of Marquette County.

Where the River Ends

The Mitchigan River eventually flows into the Fence River. This meeting point is in the northeast area of Iron County, specifically in Mansfield Township. The Fence River then joins the Michigamme River. The Michigamme River is a branch of the larger Menominee River. Finally, the Menominee River carries all this water into Lake Michigan, one of North America's largest freshwater lakes.

Smaller Streams Joining the Mitchigan

Several smaller streams and outflows from lakes feed into the Mitchigan River, adding to its flow. These are called tributaries.

  • Water flowing out from Little Chief Lake in Marquette County
    • This water comes from Chief Lake, also in Marquette County
      • And Chief Lake gets its water from Springhole Lake in Marquette County
  • Water flowing out from Bullhead Lake in Marquette County
  • The West Branch Mitchigan River, which begins in the southeast part of Baraga County
    • Leonard Creek, which starts in the northeast part of Iron County, flows into the West Branch Mitchigan River
