The Miyako Islands (宮古列島, Miyako Rettō) are a beautiful group of islands in Japan. They are located in Okinawa Prefecture, which is a southern part of Japan. These islands are found to the east of the Yaeyama Islands. They sit between the larger Ryukyu Islands and the island of Taiwan.
Miyako Island is the largest island in this group. About 55,914 people live there. A special bridge connects Miyako Island to Ikema Island, which has about 801 residents. Another place, Tarama village, is home to about 1,214 people. This village is located between two islands called Minna and Tarama.
The people who originally lived on the Miyako Islands are known as the Miyako people. They are part of a bigger group of people called the Ryukyuan ethnicity.
People on the islands speak two main languages. One is the native Miyako language. The other is Japanese. In the past, the Miyako language was not encouraged. Because of this, most young people on the islands speak Japanese today.
