The area was named Modbury on September 1, 1840, by R. S. Kelly. He named it after his hometown in Devonshire, England.

Modbury's Story: A Look Back

Robert Simon Kelly bought land in the area in 1842. He named his home "Treehill," but it was often called Modbury Farm. The Modbury Hotel, which is still around today, is thought to have been built by Robert Kelly in September 1858.

In 1857, Mr. Kelly worked to develop the Modbury village on his land. He encouraged people to settle there, naming the new village after his birthplace in Devonshire, England.
