Exploring the History of Model Farms
This section looks at how Model Farms got its name and what it was like in the past.
Early Land and Governors
Long ago, the land that is now Model Farms was part of a large area owned by the governors of New South Wales, like Governor Phillip and Governor Macquarie. This big piece of land stretched from what is now Parramatta Park all the way to Junction Road in Winston Hills. Its sides were marked by Fitzwilliam Road and Windsor Road.
How Model Farms Got Its Name
In 1857, a law was passed to sell off parts of this large government land. However, a special section of at least 200 acres was saved to become a park for the people of Parramatta. Other parts of the land became known as Northmead and Westmead.
The name 'Model Farms' was given to a smaller area within what is now Winston Hills. This area was set aside for families to have small farms where they could grow most of their own food and sell any extra. This was different from the very large farms owned by big landowners, who sometimes just bought land to sell it later in smaller pieces.
Life on the Farms
The Model Farms area was once covered with many different types of farms. You would have seen orchards full of fruit trees, farms raising ducks, and dairies producing milk.
Transporting Farm Produce
Getting fresh food from the farms to the markets was very important. From 1901 to 1923, a tram service ran from Parramatta along Windsor Road. Later, from 1923 to 1932, a train service took over, stopping at a place called Model Farm Siding. Farmers would load their produce onto these trams and trains to send it to markets in Parramatta and other places. Eventually, trucks became more popular for moving goods because they made it easier to transport produce with less handling.
