Modesto Brocos y Gómez (born February 9, 1852 – died November 28, 1936) was a talented artist. He was a painter and engraver from Galicia, Spain, who later became a Brazilian citizen.

Modesto Brocos created art in many different styles and on various topics. He also wrote several books about painting. He is especially known for helping to make printmaking popular in Brazil. He was one of the first major artists in Brazil to create woodcuts, which are a type of print. He did this while working for a magazine called O Mequetrefe.

Modesto Brocos: Early Life & Art Training

Modesto Brocos was born in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. His family was not wealthy, but they loved art. His grandfather and father were writers. His brother, Isidoro Brocos, became a sculptor and was Modesto's first art teacher.

Starting His Art Journey

At 18, after finishing his first studies, Modesto moved to Argentina. He didn't find success there. Two years later, he moved to Brazil. In Rio de Janeiro, he found work illustrating O Mequetrefe. This was a weekly magazine that made fun of things in a gentle way. The money he earned allowed him to study at the Academia Imperial de Belas Artes. There, he learned from famous artists like Victor Meirelles and João Zeferino da Costa.

Studying Art in Europe

After two years in Brazil, Modesto moved to Paris, France. He joined the École des Beaux-Arts and took lessons from Henri Lehmann. He wasn't happy with what he was learning, so he moved to Madrid, Spain. He studied briefly at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando.

In 1883, he moved to Rome, Italy. He received a special scholarship from the government of A Coruña, Spain. In Rome, he worked with another Spanish artist, Francisco Pradilla. He spent five years studying at the Accademia Chigi.

Modesto Brocos: Teaching & Later Career

By 1890, Modesto Brocos was showing his art at the famous Salon in Paris. He felt his art education was complete. He then accepted an invitation to teach at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes in Brazil. This school was the new name for the Imperial Academy where he had studied before. The director, Rodolfo Bernardelli, invited him.
