Mogote is a small, unincorporated community located in Conejos County, a part of the U.S. state of Colorado. An unincorporated community is a place where people live together, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, services are usually provided by the county.

Where is Mogote Located?

Mogote is found in the southern part of Colorado. You can find it along Colorado Highway 17. It's located just south of the Conejos River and is about 4 miles (which is about 6.4 kilometers) west of a town called Antonito.

A Glimpse into Mogote's Past

Mogote once had its own post office! It opened in 1897, which was a long time ago, and helped people send and receive mail. This post office stayed open for about 23 years, finally closing its doors in 1920. The community got its name from special natural landforms called "mogotes" that are found near the area. A mogote is a type of isolated, steep-sided hill, often made of limestone, that rises sharply from a flatter landscape.
