Professional career
In 2016, Safwat made history by becoming the first Egyptian player since 1997 to reach the final of an ATP Challenger tournament. This happened at the tournament in Kenitra, where he played against Maximilian Marterer but lost. He also reached the semifinals at the Challenger tournament in Launceston in 2017.
In 2018, Safwat had another great run. He beat Jordan Thompson, a player ranked in the top 100, on his way to his second Challenger singles final in Anning. He lost that final to Prajnesh Gunneswaran.
Safwat got to play in his first major tennis tournament, called a Grand Slam, at the 2018 French Open. He got in as a "lucky loser" and played against Grigor Dimitrov. Even though he lost, he was the first man from Egypt to play in a Grand Slam singles main draw in 22 years.
In January 2020, Safwat qualified for a Grand Slam main draw on his own for the first time. This was at the 2020 Australian Open. He won three matches in the qualifying rounds to earn his spot. This made him the first Egyptian since Ismail El Shafei in 1978 to play in the main draw of the Australian Open.
In February 2020, Safwat won his first singles Challenger title. He won the Launceston International by beating local player Alex Bolt in the final. This was a big achievement, as he was the first Egyptian to win a Challenger singles title since Tamer El-Sawy in 1996. This win also helped him reach his highest-ever world ranking of No. 130 on February 10, 2020.
National representation
In 2018, Safwat was part of the Egyptian Davis Cup team. They made it to the third round of the Europe/Africa Zone II bracket. This was the first time Egypt had reached this stage since 1996.
Safwat also made history for Egyptian sports at the Tokyo Olympic Games. He played in the Olympics in 2021, becoming the first Egyptian man to qualify for tennis at the Olympics. He earned his spot by winning the 2019 African Games.
