Mohamed Talbi was born in Tunis, Tunisia, on September 16, 1921. He went to school in Tunis and later studied in Paris, France.

He wrote many books and articles on different topics. These included the history of the Maghreb region in the Middle Ages. He also explored how Islam relates to women and democracy. Talbi thought deeply about Islam's role in the world today.

Mohamed Talbi died in Tunis on May 1, 2017.

Mohamed Talbi's Career

Mohamed Talbi spent most of his career teaching history. He focused on the history of the Mediterranean area and North Africa. He taught at the Institute of Higher Education in Tunis.

In 1955, he became the first dean of the School of Letter and Human Sciences in Tunis. He also led the history department there. Later, he directed a science magazine called Les Cahiers de Tunisie.

In 1968, Talbi earned his Ph.D. from the Sorbonne. His Ph.D. paper was about "The Aghlabid Emirate, a political History." This paper looked at Tunisia's first Muslim ruling family, the Aghlabids. He especially studied how slavery was important in their farming and economy.

From 2011 to 2012, Talbi was the president of the Tunisian Academy of Sciences, Letters, and Arts.
