Early Life and Education
Mohamud Noor was born in Somalia in 1978. When the civil war started in Somalia, his family moved to Kenya to find safety. In 1999, they came to the United States and made their home in Minnesota.
He studied computer science at Metropolitan State University. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree. Before becoming a politician, he worked as a system administrator for the Minnesota Department of Human Services.
Noor also led the Confederation of Somali Community in Minnesota. This group helps immigrants in Minneapolis. In this role, he worked to get money for programs for Somali youth. These programs included job skills training, childcare, and mental health services.
Early Political Work
Working for Minneapolis Schools
In 2010, Noor first ran for a spot on the Minneapolis Public Schools board. He did not win that election. In December 2013, he was chosen to join the Minneapolis school board. He took the place of Hussein Samatar, who had passed away. Noor left the school board in 2014 to run for the Minnesota House of Representatives.
Running for Minnesota Senate
In 2011, Noor tried to become a member of the Minnesota Senate. He ran in a special election for the DFL primary. He lost this election to Kari Dziedzic.
Minneapolis City Council Campaign
In 2017, Noor ran for the City Council in Minneapolis Ward 6. He wanted to make changes in jobs, housing, and police reform. He also wanted to connect more with the people he would represent. He received support from other state politicians, including Ilhan Omar.
Noor lost the election in November 2017. He asked for a recount of the votes. After the recount, the results stayed the same. He then filed a lawsuit, saying that some people who did not live in Ward 6 might have voted. A judge dismissed his lawsuit in December 2017.
Serving in the Minnesota House of Representatives
Mohamud Noor was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2018. He has been reelected every two years since then. He first ran for this seat in 2014 and again in 2016. In 2016, Ilhan Omar won the election.
In 2018, Omar decided not to run for the state house again. She chose to run for a seat in the U.S. Congress instead. This opened the door for Noor, who won both the DFL primary and the main election that year. He has continued to win his elections since then.
Noor has important roles in the Minnesota House. Since 2023, he has been the leader of the Human Services Finance Committee. This committee deals with money for human services. He also works on committees for higher education, human services policy, and ways and means. Before 2023, he led the Workforce and Business Development Finance and Policy Committee.
What Mohamud Noor Believes In
Noor believes the government should help fix differences in health care, education, jobs, and housing for different groups of people. He supported a bill called "Driver's Licenses for All." He has spoken out against negative comments made by former President Donald Trump about Somali people. Noor has also defended Ilhan Omar when she faced criticism.
