Mohavea is a group of plants, also known as a genus, that has two different species. These plants grow naturally in the deserts of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Sometimes, Mohavea plants are grouped with the snapdragon plants, which are very similar to them.

What are Mohavea Plants?

Mohavea plants are known for their beautiful flowers. There are two main types, or species, in this group. Both types are annuals, meaning they grow, flower, and die within one year. They usually bloom in the spring.

The Two Mohavea Species

  • Ghost Flower (Mohavea confertiflora): This plant has large, light-colored flowers. They often have cool purple spots that look like patterns.
  • Lesser Mohavea (Mohavea breviflora): This plant has smaller, yellow flowers.

These plants used to be part of a plant family called Scrophulariaceae. But now, scientists have moved them to a different family called Plantaginaceae. A plant family is like a big group of plants that share many similar features.

Where Did the Name Mohavea Come From?

The name Mohavea comes from the Mojave River. This river is in the desert where these plants were first found. A famous explorer named John C. Frémont collected the first samples of these plants there a long time ago.
