History of Mohawk
How Mohawk Got Its Name
The community of Mohawk was named after the beautiful Mohawk River. This river flows through the area. When a post office was first opened here in 1862, it was given the name "Mohawk."
Post Office and Railroad
The Mohawk post office served the community for many years. It opened and closed a few times over the years. In 1958, it changed to a rural station, which is a smaller type of post office. It finally closed completely in 1961.
Around the same time, the Southern Pacific Railroad built a station nearby. This train station was part of the line that went to Marcola. Interestingly, the railroad station was given a different name: "Donna." So, for a while, the area had two names associated with it. There was also a place nearby known as "Mohawk Post."
