Mohawk Mountain is a super fun place to ski and snowboard! It's located in Cornwall, Connecticut, a town in Litchfield County, Connecticut. This awesome ski area was built on the side of Mohawk Mountain in 1947. A person named Walt Schoenknecht started it all.
It's a very popular spot for people who love winter sports. Skiers and snowboarders from Connecticut, New York City, and northern New Jersey come here. Mohawk Mountain is about a 95-mile drive from Manhattan. Like many ski areas on the East Coast, Mohawk Mountain sometimes doesn't get a lot of natural snow. But don't worry! They are experts at making their own snow using special machines called snow guns. This means you can almost always count on having snow to ski on!

Mohawk Mountain's Story
How It All Started
Mohawk Mountain ski area first opened its slopes in 1947. It was created by Walt Schoenknecht, who later became famous for another ski resort called Mount Snow. He had a big dream to bring skiing to Connecticut.
New Lifts and Changes
Over the years, Mohawk Mountain has added many new features to make skiing even better.
- In 1969, a new double chairlift was installed. This lift helped skiers get up the mountain faster.
- Then, in 1978, a new triple chairlift was added. Triple chairlifts can carry three people at once!
- In the summer of 2008, an even newer triple chairlift was put in place. It replaced an older double chairlift. This new lift is now called the Mohawk Triple Chair.
Facing a Challenge: The Tornado
In 1989, a powerful tornado hit the area. It caused a lot of damage to the ski area. Many trees were knocked down, and some of the ski lifts were destroyed. The mountain worked hard to rebuild the lifts. Even though it's been many years, you could still see the signs of the tornado's path from the base of the mountain for a long time.
Fun New Activities: Snowtubing!
Mohawk Mountain is always looking for new ways to have fun in the snow. In 2019, they added snowtubing to their list of activities. Snowtubing is a super exciting way to slide down the mountain on a big, inflatable tube. It's a great activity for everyone, even if you don't ski or snowboard!
