Molalla Prairie is a small community in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. About 3,500 people live here. It is located just south of the town of Molalla. Molalla Prairie is an unincorporated community. This means it is not officially a city or town. Instead, the county government manages its services.
A Community's Journey
Molalla Prairie has an interesting history about how its residents tried to gain more say in local decisions.
Forming a Hamlet
In June 2009, many people living in Molalla Prairie wanted their community to have more influence. They signed petitions to vote on forming a hamlet. A hamlet is a small community, often smaller than a village. In Oregon, forming a hamlet can give residents more political clout. This means they would have more power and influence over local issues.
One big reason for wanting this change was to have a stronger voice. Residents wanted to oppose a natural gas pipeline planned for the area. They also wanted to discuss agritourism, which is tourism related to farms.
The Vote and Approval
In March 2010, the people living within the proposed hamlet's boundaries voted. Most residents voted in favor of forming the hamlet. The vote was 75 in favor and 60 against.
On April 1, 2010, the Clackamas County Board of Commissioners officially approved the formation. This meant Molalla Prairie became a hamlet.
Changes and Future
However, the hamlet's journey took another turn. In October 2014, all the people on the hamlet's board of directors decided to step down. The board of directors is a group of people chosen to manage the hamlet. They also decided to give the hamlet's money to the nearby hamlet of Beavercreek.
Because of these changes, the future of Molalla Prairie as a hamlet is not clear.
