About Mollie Hunter's Life
Mollie Hunter grew up near Edinburgh in a small village called Longniddry. Later in her life, she lived in Inverness. You can even see a painting of her in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery!
Her first book was Patrick Kentigern Keenan, published in 1963. It had pictures by Charles Keeping. In the United States, this book was called The Smartest Man in Ireland.
Awards and Recognition
Mollie Hunter won several important awards for her books.
Winning the Carnegie Medal
Her book The Stronghold won the 1974 Carnegie Medal. This award is given by the Library Association for the best children's book written by a British subject that year. The same book was published in the Netherlands as "Een toren tegen de romeinen". It won the "Zilveren Griffel" (Silver Pen) award in 1978 for children's writing.
Phoenix Award
In 1992, she won the Phoenix Award from the Children's Literature Association. This award celebrates a great children's book published twenty years earlier that didn't win a major award at the time. Her book A Sound of Chariots (published in 1972) received this honor.
A Quote in the Dictionary
The Oxford English Dictionary even includes a quote from Mollie Hunter! It's about the word "consensus" (which means a general agreement). She said: "No single group has the right to ignore a consensus of thoughtful opinion."
