Molly E. Holzschlag (born January 25, 1963 – died September 5, 2023) was an amazing American author, teacher, and champion for the internet. She wrote or helped write 35 books about how websites are made and how they should work for everyone. One of her famous books was The Zen of CSS Design: Visual Enlightenment for the Web. People even called her the "Fairy Godmother of the Web" because she worked so hard to make the internet better.

Championing Web Standards

Molly Holzschlag believed the internet should be easy for everyone to use. She worked hard to make sure websites followed certain rules. These rules are called "web standards." Following these standards helps websites work well on different devices. It also makes them accessible to people with disabilities.

Making the Web Better

From 2009 to 2013, Molly led a free event called Open Web Camp. This event taught people about web technologies. She focused on making the web open and easy to use.

Molly also led the Web Standards Project (WaSP). This group encouraged companies like Microsoft and Netscape to support modern web standards. She even challenged Bill Gates to fix problems with Internet Explorer. Her goal was to make the internet a better place for everyone.

Working with Web Experts

Molly was an expert for the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). This is a group that creates web standards. She helped with important parts of the web, like CSS (which controls how websites look) and HTML (which builds the structure of websites).

Teaching Web Skills

Molly loved to teach others about the internet. In 2011, she worked for an organization called Knowbility. She taught classes on new web technologies like HTML5. She also taught about ARIA, which helps make websites accessible.

University Courses

Molly taught web design courses at several universities. These included the University of Arizona and the University of Georgia. She helped many students learn how to build great websites.

Writing Books and Articles

Molly wrote or co-authored 35 books about web design. These books taught people how to create websites that follow open standards. Her book The Zen of CSS Design is very well-known. She also wrote about music for the Tucson Weekly newspaper.

Her Life and Legacy

Molly faced some health challenges in her life. She needed help with medical costs, and many people supported her through online fundraising. Molly passed away at her home in Tucson on September 5, 2023. She left behind a legacy of making the internet more open and accessible for everyone.
