Molossia, also known as the Republic of Molossia, is a special kind of country called a micronation. It was started by Kevin Baugh, and its main office is in his home near Dayton, Nevada. Kevin Baugh has been the president of Molossia since September 3, 1999.
Before becoming president, Kevin Baugh was a leader in other small projects from 1977 to 1999. He later changed Molossia from being like a kingdom (a monarchy) to a republic, which is a country led by elected officials.
What is Molossia?
Molossia is mostly made up of Kevin Baugh's house, which is called the Government House. This area is about 0.001 acres (4 m2) in size. It also includes about 1.3 acres (5,000 m2) of land around the house. All of Molossia is surrounded by the state of Nevada. It used to claim a small piece of land in Pennsylvania too.
Molossia is seen as a very detailed hobby that has grown a lot. It began as a fun project when Kevin Baugh was a child in 1977. Later, in the late 1990s, it became a more official "territory."
Where Did the Name Molossia Come From?
The name Molossia comes from the Spanish word morro. This word means "small rocky hill." Kevin Baugh has said that the name is not connected to an ancient Greek group called the Molossians.
