Mona K. Sutphen, born on November 10, 1967, is an important American leader. She worked closely with former President Barack Obama. From 2009 to 2011, she was a top helper in the White House. Her job was to advise on important policies. This role was called the White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy.
Today, Mona Sutphen is a partner at The Vistria Group. This company helps manage investments. Before that, she worked as a managing director at UBS AG. She also held a diplomatic job during the Clinton Administration. This was with the United States National Security Council.

Early Life and Education
Mona Sutphen grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She went to John Marshall High School there. Her mother was Jewish and her father was African American.
She studied international relations at Mount Holyoke College. She earned her bachelor's degree in 1989. Later, she earned a master's degree from the London School of Economics.
Career in Government and Business
From 2001 to 2008, Sutphen worked at Stonebridge International. This company helped large businesses with their plans worldwide. She was a managing director there.
Before that, she worked for the United States Foreign Service. She was a diplomat for the U.S. government. She served in the Clinton White House from 1991 to 2000. She was also part of the National Security Council. This group advises the President on safety and defense. She also worked at the State Department. She served at the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand.
Mona Sutphen also shares her knowledge with others. She used to teach at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. She also helped write a book. The book is called The Next American Century: How the U.S. Can Thrive as Other Powers Rise.
