The Monadnock Road Historic District is a special neighborhood in Newton, Massachusetts. It's called a historic district because it has many old homes that are important to the area's past. This neighborhood was built in the 1920s on what used to be a large private estate.

Most of the houses here are built in a style called Tudor Revival. This district shows how much Newton grew during that time. It was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990, which means it's recognized as a place worth preserving.

Exploring the Monadnock Road District

Monadnock Road is located in the Chestnut Hill part of Newton. It starts near Boston College on Beacon Street and winds its way northwest towards Hobart Road, close to Commonwealth Avenue.

How the Neighborhood Grew

Commonwealth Avenue was finished in 1895. This new road made it easier to develop large pieces of land that were once private estates. A group called the Newton Boulevard Syndicate, which included local landowners like Robert Bishop, helped make this happen.

The eastern part of the district was developed in 1924. This land used to belong to Louis Liggett, who was a very successful businessman who owned many drug stores.

The famous landscape architects Olmsted, Olmsted and Eliot first drew plans for Monadnock Road and nearby streets in 1895. However, building homes in this specific area didn't really start until the 1910s and 1920s.

Homes and Architecture

The Monadnock Road Historic District includes 63 houses. Most of them are on Monadnock Road, but some are also on Tudor Road, Hammond Street, Hammondswood Road, Wachusetts Road, and Hobart Street.

The most common style of house you'll see here is the Tudor Revival. These homes often look like old English cottages with steep roofs, decorative half-timbering (wood beams on the outside), and tall chimneys. You can also find houses in the Colonial Revival style, which looks like early American homes, and the Craftsman style, known for its natural materials and handmade details.

The houses in this district are generally large, well-designed, and built with high-quality materials. This historic district is right next to another one called the Gray Cliff Historic District, which was developed even earlier on Robert Bishop's land.
