Monchhichi (Monchhichi (モンチッチ, Monchitchi)) is a popular line of Japanese stuffed monkey toys. The Sekiguchi Corporation first released these adorable toys in 1974. For a time, Mattel licensed them in the United States until 1985. Later, Sekiguchi began distributing them directly all over the world.

These charming characters have inspired several television series. The first was the Japanese anime series Monchhichi Twins (Futago no Monchhichi (ふたごのモンチッチ)) in 1980. An American cartoon series, Monchhichis, followed in 1983. Other shows include a French cartoon in 2001, a Japanese stop-motion series in 2005, and a French CGI series called Monchhichi Tribe in 2017.

Discovering Monchhichi: A Fun Toy History

The Sekiguchi Corporation, a well-known doll company in Tokyo, Japan, owns the Monchhichi brand. Yoshiharu Washino created Monchhichi on January 25, 1974. He designed them as an improved version of an earlier toy called the Kuta Kuta Monkey.

The Story Behind the Name

Sekiguchi created Monchhichi to encourage love and respect in children and adults. The name "Monchhichi" has a special meaning. "Mon" comes from the French word for "mine." "Chichi" sounds like a baby's pacifier in Japanese. The name also sounds a lot like the English word "monkey."

Monchhichi's Journey Around the World

The dolls quickly became a hit in Japan. The 1980 animated TV series, Monchhichi Twins, made them even more popular. In 1975, Monchhichi dolls began to be exported to Germany and Austria. Over the next few years, they reached many more countries.

The dolls sometimes had different names in other places. They were called "Chicaboo" in the United Kingdom and "Kiki" in France. In Italy, they were "Mon Cicci," and in Denmark, they were "Bølle." Other similar toys, not officially from Sekiguchi, also appeared in countries like Hungary and Spain. Monchhichi dolls were incredibly popular in Germany during the 1980s, even more so than in Japan at that time.

Monchhichi in North America

The Monchhichi dolls arrived in North America in 1980. Mattel bought the rights to sell the toy line there. To help promote the dolls, Hanna-Barbera produced an American cartoon series, Monchhichis, which aired on ABC in 1983.

Mattel stopped selling the dolls in 1985. However, Sekiguchi brought them back in 2004 for Monchhichi's 30th anniversary. Monchhichi dolls have remained available in the United States from retailers such as Urban Outfitters.

A Unified Global Brand

In 2013, Sekiguchi decided to handle Monchhichi distribution worldwide directly. They stopped using different names in foreign markets. The brand was officially unified under the single name "Monchhichi" everywhere.

Monchhichi dolls remain popular in Europe, often cherished as nostalgic toys or by collectors. Many different types and sizes of Monchhichi have been created. For example, the original Classic Monchhichi dolls are still available in various sizes, from 10 cm to 80 cm. Other versions include Boutique Monchhichi, which wear different outfits, and Mother Care Monchhichi, which carry a baby in a front pocket. Anniversary editions are also released. You can even find dollhouses made for Monchhichi. In 2025, The Mall Group, a retail company in Thailand, worked with the Monchhichi brand for Christmas.
