Monroeville was a small town that used to exist in California. It was also sometimes called Munroeville. The town was named after its founder, a person named U. P. Monroe. You could find Monroeville near the Sacramento River. It was in an area that is now known as Glenn County. The town was about 15 miles (24 km) north of Butte City. It sat near where Stony Creek flows into the river. The land there was about 128 feet (39 meters) above sea level.

Monroeville: A Lost Town

Monroeville was once a busy place. It even served an important role for a few years. It was the main center for the government of a larger area.

Becoming a County Seat

From 1851 to 1853, Monroeville was the county seat for Colusi County. A county seat is like the capital city for a county. It's where the main government offices are located. The people living in another community, Colusa, wanted their town to be the county seat instead. They worked hard and eventually won this right in 1853.

In 1852, records show that 62 people lived in Monroeville. After 1853, there are no more records of people living there. The town slowly faded away. By 1874, Monroeville had disappeared from maps. Today, the only thing left of the old town is a cemetery.

A Famous Resident

A well-known person named William B. Ide once lived in Monroeville. He was a leader in an important event in California history. This event was called the Bear Flag Revolt of 1846. William B. Ide passed away in Monroeville in 1852.

The Post Office and New County

Monroeville also had its own post office. This post office helped people send and receive mail. It was open for about nine years, from 1853 to 1862. Later, in 1891, a new county was formed. This new county was called Glenn County. The land where Monroeville used to be became part of this new Glenn County.
