Monster Rancher DS is a fun video game for the Nintendo DS. It's a life simulation game where you get to raise, train, and battle cool monsters! In Japan, it's known as Monster Farm DS 2: Yomigaeru! Master Breeder Densetsu (モンスターファーム DS 2: よみがえる! マースター ブリーダー 伝説).

The game was made by a company called Cing. It was released in Japan on August 7, 2008, and later in North America on August 3, 2010. Unfortunately, it wasn't released in Europe.

Gameplay Basics

Monster Rancher DS Gameplay
Two monsters fighting against each other in a tournament

In Monster Rancher DS, you explore a place called the BOMBA region. Your main goal is to raise, fight, and even breed different kinds of monsters. You play as a monster breeder, but you never actually see your character on screen. Instead, you talk to your helper, Cleo, and make all your choices using menus.

How to Get New Monsters

There are a few exciting ways to get new monsters in the game:

  • Drawing Pictures: You can use the Nintendo DS touchscreen to draw pictures in a special area called the Magic Field. Your drawings can magically turn into new monsters!
  • Saying Incantations: You can also use the DS microphone to say special words or "incantations." These words can also help create a monster.
  • Combining Monsters: If you have two monsters you really like, you can combine them! This process can create a brand new monster with traits from both parents. Sometimes, if a combination isn't quite right, you might get a special "glitch" monster. These look a bit different, often light blue, and are unique!

Monster Battles

One of the best ways to earn money and become a better breeder is by having your monsters fight in tournaments.

  • Guts System: In a battle, your monster has "guts." Think of guts as their energy. Every time your monster uses a move, it costs some guts.
  • Controlling Your Monster: You can choose to control your monster yourself during a fight. Or, you can let them fight on their own, which is how they battle if you meet wild monsters.
  • Battlefield Movement: Monsters can move forward or backward on the battlefield. This lets them get into the right range for their attacks. You can even push opponents away if you get too close!
  • Touchscreen Controls: A cool feature in this game is using the touchscreen. You can tap or drag to move your monster or tell it to attack.
