Exploring Monte Chingolo
Early Days and Growth
Monte Chingolo was founded on November 23, 1815. It was started by Juan Manuel de Rosas, an important figure in Argentine history.
The town was home to Las Higueritas. This was the first recorded abattoir (a place where animals are processed for meat) in Argentina.
Monte Chingolo grew a lot after 1927. This was when a new train station opened. The station belonged to the Ferrocarril Provincial de Buenos Aires railway. More abattoirs and factories soon opened in the town.
A Significant Event in 1975
On December 23, 1975, a military base in Monte Chingolo was attacked. This base was called the Battalion 601 Arsenal. A group known as the ERP carried out the attack. This event was a major defeat for the ERP group. It greatly weakened their organization.
Changes to the Town's Landscape
Later, during the National Reorganization Process (a period from 1976 to 1983), a plan was made. The plan was to extend the General Paz Freeway. This freeway was meant to connect Villa Riachuelo in Buenos Aires to the city of Avellaneda.
However, this project was never finished. Many buildings in Monte Chingolo were torn down for the freeway. This left large areas of empty land. In many cases, these empty lots were not rebuilt or used again properly.
