Monte Cristi National Park (also known as Parque Nacional Monte Cristi in Spanish) is a special protected area located on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. This park stretches from the border with Haiti all the way to Punta Rucia in the Dominican Republic. It covers a large area of about 550 square kilometers (212 square miles).

The park is famous for its unique landscape. You can find coastal lagoons, sandy beaches, and thick mangrove swamps here. One of its most striking features is a tall, flat-topped hill called a mesa, which is made of limestone. This mesa stands 237 meters (777 feet) high. From its top, you can see small islands offshore and the green, forested slopes on its northern side.

A Dry and Unique Environment

The Monte Cristi National Park is a very dry place. It receives only a little more than two inches of rain each year. This means the plants and animals living here must be very tough to survive with so little water!

Plants of the Park

Even though it's dry, the huge mesa provides a home for special plants. One of these is an indigenous plant species, meaning it's native only to this area. It's called sabia montecristini. This plant has adapted to the dry conditions and is an important part of the park's ecosystem.

Animals of the Park

The park is also home to several types of reptiles. These cold-blooded animals thrive in the warm, dry climate. While there are no marked paths for visitors to follow, the park's natural beauty and unique wildlife make it a fascinating place to explore for those who love nature.
