Monte Grande is a city in Argentina. It is part of the larger Greater Buenos Aires area, which is a big group of cities and towns connected together. Monte Grande is the main city, or "administrative seat," of the Esteban Echeverría Partido, which is like a county or district. This city is located in the Buenos Aires Province.
Monte Grande was first started in 1824 as a place for farming. In the 1820s, the government of Martín Rodríguez worked with William Parish Robertson. They helped 500 Scottish immigrants come to live and farm in the new town.
The city covers an area of about 22.57 square kilometers (8.71 sq mi). According to a 2001 count, about 109,644 people live in Monte Grande.

How Monte Grande Grew
The city was named after an old area called Pago de Monte Grande. This area was first explored by a Spanish Empire Conquistador. The town began to grow around natural forests of tala and ombú trees. Later, people started planting vineyards and peach trees here.
Founding the Modern City
In 1889, a company called Sociedad Coni, Sansinena y Cía. bought the land. This company was known for its "saladeros," which were places that processed meat. On April 3, 1889, Governor Máximo Paz officially signed a law to establish Monte Grande as a town.
Some of the first important businesses in Monte Grande included a kiln (a type of oven for making bricks or pottery) opened by Coni & Sansinena. There was also a market called Bon Marché.
Becoming a County Seat
In 1913, the Esteban Echeverría Partido was created, and Monte Grande became its main city. For much of the 20th century, many meat packing plants operated in Monte Grande. However, these plants eventually closed down.
Today, a Coca-Cola bottling plant and the Sofía Santamarina Hospital are two of the biggest employers in the city. Monte Grande has become a "bedroom community." This means many people who live here travel to other cities for work. The city's economy now focuses more on services for its residents.
Radio Station
Monte Grande was once home to an important oversea telegraphy radio station. This station helped send messages across the ocean using radio waves.
