Montegut is a small community in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's a special area defined by the government for counting people. In 2020, about 1,465 people lived there.

Montegut is part of a larger area that includes the cities of Houma, Bayou Cane, and Thibodaux. You might know Montegut from the 2012 movie Beasts of the Southern Wild, which was filmed there.

A Look Back: Montegut's History

Montegut started growing around a sugar mill. This mill was built way back in 1883.

The community got its name in 1885. A congressman named Edward James Gay named it. He chose the name to honor Gabriel Montegut. Gabriel Montegut was a well-known person from Houma, which is the main town of the parish.

In 1941, a guide to Louisiana reported that Montegut was about 8 feet above sea level. At that time, only about 200 people lived there.

Learning in Montegut

Public schools in Montegut are managed by the Terrebonne Parish School District. Students in the community can attend Montegut Elementary School and Montegut Middle School.

There is also a public school called École Pointe-au-Chien nearby. Even though it has a Montegut postal address, it is actually in Pointe-aux-Chenes. This school used to be Pointe-aux-Chenes Elementary School.

For students who want to continue their education after high school, Fletcher Technical Community College serves the area. Also, Delgado Community College includes Terrebonne Parish in its service area.

Montegut in Movies

Montegut was the main place where the 2012 film Beasts of the Southern Wild was filmed. The director, Benh Zeitlin, and his team set up their work in an old gas station in town.

They built the movie's fictional village, called the "Bathtub," by hand. They used items they found and old, rusty equipment from around the area. This movie was very popular and was even nominated for four Academy Awards.
