A Look Back: Montello's History

Montello sits on a hill close to central Burnie. It got its name around 1903. The highest spot in Montello is about 130 meters (around 426 feet) above sea level. You can find this high point near where Tattersall Street and Jorgensen Street meet.

How Streets Got Their Names

The main road in Montello is called View Road. It used to be named Old Mooreville Road. In 1924, its name was changed to avoid confusion with the new Mooreville Road.

Elizabeth Street also had its name changed in 1942. It was originally Edward Street. This change happened to prevent mix-ups with Edwardes Street in South Burnie. Mr. E. Tracey, whose father owned the land, suggested the new name.

Building Homes in Montello

In January 1945, plans were approved for the first part of the Garner's Estate. This area was for government housing, and the Agricultural Bank helped with the project. Streets like Jorgensen, Morse, Oates, and Truganini were named on the maps for this new area.

Later, in 1949, the Van Diemen's Land Company also released their plans for building homes in Montello. Montello was officially recognized as a specific area in 1966.

The Story Behind Jorgenson Street Reserve

The Jorgenson Street Reserve is a local park. It is named after Jørgen Jørgensen. He worked for the Van Diemen's Land Company back in the 1820s.
