Exploring the History of Montemorelos
How Montemorelos Began
The story of Montemorelos started in 1637. Back then, the Governor of Nuevo León, Martín de Zavala, made a deal with Captain Alonso de León. The Captain was promised a large piece of land if he could build a new town there within a year.
Captain de León shared this land with his children. One of his sons, Alonso de León González, set up his property by the Pilón River. He created a small settlement and named it after "Our Lady of Regla." This was a special statue of the Virgin Mary, important to Catholics.
Growth and the First Church
The settlement quickly grew bigger. Soon, the people living there asked the Bishop of Guadalajara for help. They wanted a church built and dedicated to St Matthew.
The building of this church in 1665 is seen as the official founding of modern-day Montemorelos. It marked the beginning of the city we know today.
